“Family Portrait” by Lea Vidaković – Between Animation and Space

16 May – 15 June 2026

Opening: 16 May 2026, 4:00 PM

Ruse Art Gallery

As part of the festival programme, internationally acclaimed visual artist and animator Lea Vidaković presents Family Portrait — a work that exists simultaneously as an animated film and a spatial installation.

In its exhibition format, the work unfolds as a multilayered visual experience comprising seven synchronized projections, alongside the original puppets and miniature sets used in the filmmaking process. In this way, visitors encounter two parallel dimensions of the narrative — the virtual world unfolding on screen and the physical, material presence of the installation itself.

The story takes place inside a family home divided into several rooms, with each projection revealing a different fragment of the overall narrative. Unlike the linear structure of the film, the installation offers a fragmented and non-linear experience in which viewers construct their own path through the story and the relationships between the characters.

Family Portrait explores the tension hidden within seemingly ordinary family life. The narrative follows a gradual transition from a familiar domestic routine to a growing sense of unease triggered by the unexpected arrival of guests. Rather than relying on overt drama, the tension is built through subtle gestures, repetition, and restrained emotional reactions.

Inspired by a reflection by Daisaku Ikeda that every family carries its own difficult-to-share internal conflicts, Lea Vidaković creates a work that places the viewer in the position of an observer of intimate yet universally recognizable human conditions.

Through its carefully constructed visual environment and meticulous attention to detail, Family Portrait offers an experience in which animation extends beyond the screen and becomes a space for observation, empathy, and the gradual unfolding of hidden tensions within everyday life.
