Mission of the Project
The Ruse Painting School of the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s is distinguished by its distinctive artistic atmosphere, diversity of styles, and strong individual artistic voices.
Through this project, the Ruse Art Gallery seeks to bring this heritage beyond the city, present it to new audiences, and highlight its significance within the broader context of Bulgarian culture.
The exhibition reveals not only the work of individual artists, but also the cultural environment that brought them together—the city of Ruse, with its European traditions, its connection to the Danube, and its vibrant artistic life during the second half of the 20th century.

Travelling Exhibition
At the heart of the project is the creation of a mobile exhibition featuring 69 works from the collection of the Ruse Art Gallery, representing the work of 23 artists – painters and sculptors associated with the artistic community of Ruse.
The exhibition traces the development of the Ruse Painting School during the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, revealing the diversity of artistic approaches, individual styles, and thematic directions. Designed as an adaptable travelling exhibition, it can be presented in different museums and gallery spaces across the country, reaching new audiences beyond the region.
Alongside the original artworks, the exhibition includes archival materials, documents, biographical presentations of the artists, multimedia content, short documentary films, and digital resources accessed through interactive elements and QR codes. These additional materials place the artworks within their historical and cultural context and reveal the atmosphere in which the Ruse Painting School emerged.
An integral part of the project is the creation of a bilingual scholarly catalogue, presenting the development of the school, the artistic context of the period, the artists’ biographies, and reproductions of works from the gallery’s collection. The publication will serve as a valuable resource for researchers, students, and anyone interested in Bulgarian art.
New Audiences and a Sustainable Heritage
The project includes the development of an educational programme for different age groups, designed to encourage active engagement with the artworks and a deeper understanding of the artistic heritage presented.
Educational materials for children and young people, creative workshops, resources adapted to different needs, and digital forms of access to the content are planned. Through these approaches, the exhibition becomes a space for discovery, dialogue, and creativity, connecting historical memory with contemporary audiences.
As part of the project, the necessary conservation and restoration activities will be carried out to ensure the sustainable preservation and presentation of the artworks.
“Ruse Painting School” presents the artistic heritage of a creative community that emerged within the distinctive cultural environment of Ruse during the second half of the 20th century. Through artworks, archival materials, and scholarly content, the project reveals the place of these artists within the development of Bulgarian art and creates an opportunity for their work to reach new generations of viewers.
