The materiality of thoughts. How to give materiality to mood and feeling? To the state?
In fine art, we have classical methods, we learn techniques, and we are tested on technologies. We outsmart them, we learn them, we become kings. But this is not enough. I have studied Painting, and I know. You work with oil on immobile rectangular fields. At some point, you must step over convention and comfort and enter the unknown other.
Here we are witnessing this transformation in Deyan Yordanov. He seeks depth. We have placed his last two paintings with pure paint – the donkey and the boat, which are a transition to the depth of velvet. There the gaze inevitably sinks, sucked in by the countless hairs. They move like algae and absorb the light differently each time. Here, in his new works, there is no static, there is a moving texture.
When I first saw the sinking works of Anish Kapoor, the mirrored infinities of Stella Vasileva, and the illusionistic choreographic video aesthetics of Philippe Decouflé, I felt a purely physiological effect that awakened unsuspected neural connections to sensations and states.
This is the materiality of thoughts, which in the case of Deyan Yordanov is unmistakably influenced by the intricate structure of velvet.
