Rescue Restoration Brings Valuable Works from the Collection of the Art Gallery – Ruse Back to Life

The Art Gallery – Ruse is in the final stage of the project “Rescue restoration of movable cultural values from the collection of the Art Gallery – Ruse”, implemented with the support of the Ministry of Culture. The initiative, which was launched at the end of 2024, aims not only to restore paintings in poor condition, but also to ensure their long-term preservation and wider accessibility to the public.

Restoration of previously inaccessible works

For decades, a number of valuable paintings from the gallery’s collection have remained hidden from the public due to the lack of its own restoration studio and their deteriorated condition. Some of them were acquired when the collection was initially formed in 1947, and others in the 1980s.

Today, 16 works are given new life thanks to the work of the artist-restorer Silvia Varadinova-Papadaki, a lecturer at the National Academy of Arts. Under her care, works by significant authors such as V. Dickel Salvius, Boris Vassilev, Svetlin Rusev, Toma Trifonovski and others are being restored. After the restoration, they will be able to be presented in exhibitions again with dignity and maintained in accordance with professional standards.

Art in a digital environment

The second part of the project is aimed at digitization and online access. The restored paintings will be professionally filmed and presented in an online exhibition, while the scientific archive of the institution will also be updated. In this way, the valuable works will be present not only in the halls of the gallery, but also in the virtual space – through the website, Facebook page and YouTube channel of the National Academy of Arts – Ruse.

Significance and perspective

The project is a step towards the sustainable preservation of cultural heritage and at the same time opens new horizons for its popularization. Digitization allows the works to reach a wider audience – not only the residents and guests of Ruse, but also people from different parts of Bulgaria and abroad.

By the end of November 2025, the restoration process will be completed, and the valuable works will return to the public – both in future exhibitions in the gallery and in online art spaces. In this way, Ruse will preserve and simultaneously share its artistic heritage with new generations of viewers.
