“Kinematograf” – the leading platform for short films in Bulgaria – starts its summer tour 2025 with a screening in Ruse. Under the open sky of the Danube city, in the garden next to the Art Gallery – Ruse, the first stop in a series of events in various cities of the country dedicated to Bulgarian short cinema will be held.
The event will present four exceptional contemporary Bulgarian films that have already toured international festivals and will meet the audience in Ruse in the intimate atmosphere of a summer screening.
Evening program
1. “Handbook for Happiness”
Director: Lora Markova
What makes a person truly happy? The film introduces us to several characters who are searching for their formula for happiness – through small gestures, childhood memories, love, or even just silence. With poetic language and warm visual aesthetics, this film reminds us that sometimes true happiness lies in the ordinary. And that one always needs a guide – even if it is an imaginary guide.
2. “Real People”
Director: Dimitar Dimitrov
Against the backdrop of the urban wasteland in which we often get lost, “Real People” tells the story of the unexpected connection between two strangers who collide in a moment of need. The film explores empathy, kindness and the invisible threads that connect us as people. A film about those quiet but meaningful encounters that do not change the world, but change us.
3. “My Starry Tale”
Director: Andrey Hristozov
A documentary about the planetarium in Smolyan, the history of the institution and the people who dedicated their lives to this significant mission and idea. A short story about space, the transience of human life and the relationship between man, technology and the universe.
5, “Middle Earth”
Director: Yoanna Zabcheva
The metaphor for the “middle” – geographical, emotional, cultural – becomes a scene of internal battle. The characters of this film live on the border – between generations, between East and West, between past and present. Strong cinematography, minimalism and deep symbolism turn “Middle Earth” into a contemplative journey about belonging and personal identity.
6. “Sprout”
Director: Lilyana Alexandrova
Like a small sprout, breaking its way through the asphalt, a person grows, even when it seems impossible. The film is an allegory for the aspiration to live, despite losses and difficulties. Visually impactful and emotionally charged, the story follows a young boy who discovers strength in himself after a personal tragedy – and sows hope where everything seems dry.
The event is part of the FUN OUTSIDE initiative, created in partnership between “Kinematograf” and Art Gallery – Ruse, with the mission to bring culture closer to the audience, outside of traditional spaces.
