As part of the educational programme of the Contemporary Art Festival – Ruse 2026, two workshops dedicated to cinema and its means of expression were held in May, introducing young people in Popovo and Isperih to the potential of film to provoke reflection, dialogue, and critical thinking.
On 20 May, the “Sts. Cyril and Methodius – 1882” Community Centre in Popovo hosted the “Film Analysis” workshop led by Yordan Mihaylovski, organised in collaboration with the Kinematograf platform. Students and teachers from the Vocational High School of Technology and Light Industry took part in the event, exploring different aspects of cinematic language – from character development and dramaturgy to the role of editing and sound in shaping the impact of a film.
The following day, on 21 May, the “Saznanie 1891” Community Centre in Isperih hosted a short-film workshop and discussion led by Ivan Vramin. Through screenings and conversation, participants explored the specific qualities of the short film format and its ability to convey significant ideas and emotions within a limited amount of screen time.
In both workshops, the most valuable element proved to be the active dialogue with the audience. Participants’ questions, comments, and different interpretations transformed the workshops into spaces for sharing ideas and discovering new perspectives on cinema. The meetings demonstrated that young people have a strong interest in contemporary audiovisual art when given the opportunity to be not only viewers, but also active participants in the conversation.
The events in Popovo and Isperih formed an important part of the festival’s commitment to reaching diverse audiences across the region and creating opportunities for cultural exchange beyond traditional exhibition and performance spaces. Through educational formats such as these, the Contemporary Art Festival – Ruse 2026 continued its mission of fostering encounters between art, education, and young people.
