New Bulgarian Cinema: Vol.4
On November 13, at 7:00 p.m., the Art Gallery – Ruse, together with Kinematograph, will once again explore a meaningful short film. We will dive into the world of young Bulgarian artists and the wisdom of their stories. We will collect a bouquet of emotions, surprises and twists, entering the human consciousness with its prejudices and contradictions, in the eternal battle between light and darkness, and the choice of personality.
Free Entrance! We are waiting for you!
Program:
By Coincidence/dir. Peter Chiviyski
A taxi driver, long lost in confidence and authority, decides to take a risk to prove himself to his family, but an accident leads him straight to failure.
Director Peter Civiyski brings to the fore the paradoxical contradictions that often navigate the value compass in society. The cast is more than impressive – Nikolay Ishkov, Elena Petrova, Niki Iliev, Veselin Rankov, Kitodar Todorov, Iliana Lazarova and Maria Bakalova. A story steeped in humour as well as sarcasm and social criticism.
The Chatterer/dir. Alexa Trayanova and Kalina Dimitrova
You are in a great hurry! You pick up the phone, order a taxi! Your Balkan uncle takes you, in a white greased tank top, smoking a cigarette, who listens to “pop-folk radio”, looks at you in your rapid chaos and says – They ruined this country!
We’ve all been there, but let’s see where our traveller ended up. Fasten your seat belts!
The film “The Chatterer” was realized as part of the animation challenge “CHARACTERS” of Theophrastus translated by Prof. Bogdan Bogdanov of New Bulgarian University. The tape was selected in the Festival of Bulgarian Documentary and Animation Cinema “Golden Riton”, “Open Horizons” program and the official student program of the 19th edition of the Animest International Festival in Bucharest. It also won the “Vasil Gendov” award from the Union of Bulgarian Filmmakers for the best debut of an animated film.
Ten minutes/ Dir. Nadia Todorova.
A couple bets on whether the headless chicken running around their apartment will die within 10 minutes.
The film was made in 2019 as part of the 355 Short Film Competition, organized by the Stoyan Kambarev Art Foundation, where it was selected as one of three finalists. “10 Minutes” is a hilarious comedy that will make you laugh and think about unrealistic expectations, faith, and disappointment. As the director states:
“For me, the film is a reflection of my generation. I think we generally fall into two halves – super bold dreamers and absolute cynics.”
Seven Deadly Sins / dir. Dimitar Dimitrov–Animiter and Milko Lazarov
The Raven takes the viewer on a journey through the dark side of human nature, showing the vices that can destroy Man. After every sin inevitably comes retribution.
Dimitar Dimitrov – Animator for the film:
“The plot of “Seven Deadly Sins” consists of seven separate stories that are combined into a twenty-seven-minute film. We took these stories out of the context of seven separate works by F.M. Dostoevsky. That was the most specific – to be able to create a whole, from seemingly incompatible fragments. We connected the stories through both the mood and the music of Tchaikovsky. The film is edited according to the dynamics of the music, and also in places and vice versa – the music is edited according to the dynamics of the animation. The other major challenge was that the film was conceived without dialogue. Seven stories are told with only action and music. Kind of like literature without a text.”
The screening “New Bulgarian Cinema: Vol.4” is part of the Art Gallery – Ruse project “Art – a Provocation for Social Communication” and is realized with the financial support of the Municipality of Ruse, “Culture” program.
