On 29 May, the Ruse Art Gallery welcomed producer and director Nevena Semova as part of the festival’s film programme, organized in partnership with Kinematograf. The meeting took place shortly after the North American premiere of the documentary “Jar of Time” and its award for Best Documentary, presented by the Mammoth Lakes Film Festival in California.
The audience had the opportunity to discover several films in which Semova participated as a director or producer. Despite their different themes and artistic approaches, the films were united by an interest in human stories, social tensions, and narratives that transcend national and cultural boundaries.
A particularly valuable part of the evening was the discussion following the screenings. The conversation naturally moved from the individual films to broader questions about how local stories reach international audiences and why cultural authenticity remains important in contemporary cinema. Topics included the work of the producer, the development of a film project from an initial idea to the festival screen, the challenges facing independent cinema, and the place of Bulgarian films within the international festival landscape.
The meeting generated active interest among the audience, who engaged with questions about both the creative process and the practical aspects of film production and distribution. The conversation continued after the official programme, turning the evening into a space for an exchange of ideas between professionals, film enthusiasts, and people discovering contemporary film culture.
The event once again demonstrated the festival’s ability to create encounters between local audiences and artists whose projects reach the international stage while remaining deeply connected to the stories, people, and cultural environments from which they emerge.
