1 October – 15 November 2026

Opening: 1 October 2026, 6:00 p.m.

25 black-and-white portraits. 25 individuals connected to Ruse. People with different professions, life paths and stories, whom Dimitar Mitev invites to stand before his camera not to speak about their achievements, but to allow themselves to be seen as human beings.

“Diagnosis: Dreamers” is an original photographic interpretation built around the close encounter between the photographer and the person in front of the lens. The camera moves closer to what the public image rarely reveals – character and vulnerability, pain and sadness, hope, and the traces left by the small and great struggles of life. Each portrait is an individual conversation in which light, gaze and gesture gradually construct the image.

The choice of black-and-white photography is deliberate. Freed from colour, the image is left with light, form and human presence. Familiar faces become unfamiliar in a new way, while behind the profession, public role and biography, the individual emerges.

For Dimitar Mitev, this exhibition is also a professional challenge. A photographer with more than 30 years of experience, he works primarily in advertising and studio photography. Known for his precision and masterful use of light, in “Diagnosis: Dreamers” Mitev turns this experience towards a much more intimate task – to create a portrait that does not simply show a face, but seeks the person behind it.

Over the years, Dimitar Mitev has participated in numerous artistic and photographic projects in Bulgaria and abroad. His photographs have been exhibited at the Union of Bulgarian Artists in Sofia, Alfa Art Gallery in New Brunswick, and the Consulate General of Bulgaria in New York. Alongside his artistic and professional work, for more than a decade he has shared his experience as a photography lecturer and teacher.

In “Diagnosis: Dreamers”, artists, actors, musicians, writers, educators, scientists, journalists, historians and public figures step in front of his camera. They are different people who, in their own ways, create value and shape the environment around them. Yet the exhibition places their professional identities in the background. Here, Ruse has the opportunity to encounter them up close – with their strength and uncertainty, with what they have lived through, with their hopes and the marks that time leaves on every human being.

Perhaps this is where the meaning of the title lies. “Diagnosis: Dreamers” speaks of people for whom dreaming is not an escape from reality, but an inner necessity to create, to stand their ground and to bring about change.

The exhibition is realized with the financial support of Ruse Municipality through the “Culture” Programme and Factor BG.

A Photography Exhibition by Dimitar Mitev 1 October – 15 November 2026 Opening: 1 October 2026, 6:00 p.m. 25 black-and-white portraits. 25 individuals connected to Ruse.
