Retrospective Exhibition of Nikolay Karadzhov

The retrospective exhibition of Nikolay Karadzhov invites viewers on a journey through the world of an artist for whom observation becomes a mission and painting transforms into a distinct form of contemplation. The exhibition traces his development from the early years to his mature, recognizable style—an authorial hyperrealism that positions him among the most compelling names in contemporary Bulgarian painting.

Karadzhov’s artistic path began modestly, yet with clear talent. He took his first professional steps even in unexpected places, including the army, where he became an artist “by assignment.” Later, at the National Academy of Arts, he initially focused on illustration, but his instinct and calling led him to painting. Under the guidance of Prof. Nenko Balkanski, he developed a characteristic plastic language that would later become his signature style.

Karadzhov’s hyperrealism is not a mechanical imitation of nature, but the result of years of research, discipline, and devotion. Influenced by European masters, he studied the light of Vermeer, the quietude of Morandi, the dramatic intensity of Caravaggio, and the complex color system of Velázquez. For him, the painting is a space in which the object “breathes,” and volume—the quiet architect of form—takes precedence over color. Oil on canvas and figurative composition are his natural domain, and working with a live model is key to achieving authenticity.

His work spans portraits of both spiritual and secular figures, figurative compositions, female figures, and flowers, each presented as an individual and distinctive entity. The exhibition includes works from his personal collection, the Ruse Metropolis, and the collection of the Art Gallery – Ruse, including the portrait of Patriarch Neofit.

Viewers naturally glide over the intricate details, absorbing their precision and subtlety, gradually entering a contemplative state. In the quiet space between gaze and thought, the other side of the artist emerges—the philosopher whose observant and questioning mind transforms every painting into an intimate dialogue between the visible and the invisible.

This retrospective does not merely present the artist’s oeuvre; it offers an opportunity for profound reflection on observation, form, and time, which together shape the unique world of Nikolay Karadzhov.
