BASEMENT GALLERY – A New Underground Space for Contemporary Art in Ruse

On July 8, as part of the Contemporary Art Festival – Ruse 2025, a unique and powerful new artistic space opened its doors — BASEMENT GALLERY. The project, supported by the Municipality of Ruse through the “Culture” program, transformed the basement level of the Ruse Art Gallery into a stage for contemporary visual art and sensory experimentation.

Initiated by artists Emma Yordanova and Martin Petrov (NAGONE), the gallery repurposes the raw, industrial atmosphere of the underground area as a metaphor for the artist’s subconscious — a place where memories, images, traumas, desires, and inspirations are stored and where the light of art is born from the darkness within.

BASEMENT GALLERY is more than just an exhibition space — it is a living platform for the entire creative process: from concept to realization and dialogue with the audience. The opening events — including the official launch, an artist talk, and a creative workshop — attracted a wide audience and revealed the gallery's strong potential for future artistic initiatives.

The program featured hands-on participation, including collaborative painting sessions, collage, and assemblage, where visitors created and exhibited their own pieces temporarily as part of the gallery's showcase.

BASEMENT GALLERY doesn’t end here. The space remains open for new projects, exhibitions, installations, and artistic interventions. It is an invitation to contemporary artists and viewers alike to explore the boundaries between the internal and external worlds, between darkness and illumination, between idea and realization.

BASEMENT GALLERY has a future — deep within its layers, new artistic worlds are yet to emergе
