“Perforated Landscape” by Simeon Stefanov explores space not as something solid and complete, but as a system of gaps, omissions, and “holes” that actively participate in its formation. The project draws attention to what usually goes unnoticed — the in-between zones through which perception is shaped.

The installation consists of both visual and sound components that work together to transform the familiar image of the landscape into a more abstract, almost tactile experience.

The visual part is based on photographic material captured on perforated metal surfaces in the interior of a train traveling between Sofia and Pleven. Through digital processing, individual “holes” in the image are erased and revealed again, allowing emptiness to begin shaping form. The result is an image in which absence becomes structure and void becomes an active element of the composition.

The sound component follows a similar logic. It consists of experimental electronic textures built from sustained tones that are heavily processed and fragmented to the point between sound and noise. This creates a sonic field that is constantly shifting, remaining on the threshold between music and disintegration.

In both layers — visual and sonic — chance plays a key role. A computer system governs the processes of erasure, layering, and revelation, ensuring that each iteration of the installation is different. “Perforated Landscape” offers a dynamic experience in which the boundaries between form and empty space are continuously rearranged.
